Speed Limiter Services
Supply, fitting, calibration and repair of speed limiters for commercial vehicles across Northern Ireland. DVA approved and fully certified.
Speed Limiter Specialists in Northern Ireland
Speed limiters are a legal requirement for commercial vehicles operating on UK and European roads. They restrict the maximum speed a vehicle can travel, improving road safety, reducing fuel consumption and ensuring compliance with transport regulations.
At Corr Brothers, we provide a full range of speed limiter services from our DVA approved workshop in Armagh. Whether you need a new speed limiter fitted to a goods vehicle, calibration of an existing unit, or diagnosis and repair following a fault, our experienced technicians deliver a fast, reliable service with full certification.
We work with all major speed limiter brands including Stoneridge, VDO and EGK, and can accommodate HGVs, buses, coaches and fleet vehicles of all sizes. Most installations and calibrations are completed while you wait, minimising vehicle downtime for your operation.
Our Speed Limiter Services
Supply & Fitting
New speed limiter units supplied and professionally installed for all commercial vehicle types. We carry units from leading manufacturers including Stoneridge and VDO, with full certification and compliance documentation provided on completion.
Calibration & Verification
Precise speed limiter calibration using approved testing equipment. We verify the set speed against the legal requirement for your vehicle class and issue an official calibration certificate for your compliance records.
Diagnosis & Repair
Expert fault diagnosis for speed limiters that are malfunctioning, intermittent or triggering dashboard warnings. We repair both electronic and mechanical systems and can source replacement components for all major brands.
Certification & Plates
Official speed limiter plates fitted and compliance documentation issued to the required standard. We maintain full records that satisfy DVA and DVSA inspection requirements for both UK and cross-border operations.
Fleet Management
Scheduled speed limiter calibration and maintenance programmes for fleet operators. We track calibration dates across your vehicles and provide advance notification when units are due for service, helping you stay compliant.
Pre-Test Checks
Speed limiter function testing and verification ahead of PSV or MOT inspections. We check the set speed, seal integrity and limiter plate condition, so your vehicle passes first time without costly retests.
Which Vehicles Need a Speed Limiter?
Under UK and EU legislation, speed limiters are mandatory for certain categories of commercial vehicle. The regulations apply to vehicles first used on or after 1 January 1988 and cover the following categories:
Exemptions may apply to certain specialist vehicles, military vehicles and vehicles that cannot exceed the set speed by design. If you are unsure whether your vehicle requires a speed limiter, contact our workshop and we will advise based on your vehicle registration and type approval documentation.
How Speed Limiters Work
Speed limiters use electronic control to restrict fuel delivery or engine power when the vehicle reaches its programmed maximum speed.
Speed Signal Monitoring
The speed limiter unit receives a continuous signal from the vehicle's speed sensor, typically via the tachograph or directly from the gearbox output shaft. This provides real-time data on the vehicle's current road speed.
Threshold Comparison
The electronic control unit continuously compares the measured speed against the programmed maximum threshold. This threshold is calibrated and sealed during installation to prevent tampering.
Engine Power Restriction
When the vehicle reaches the set speed, the limiter intervenes by reducing fuel delivery to the engine via the electronic fuel injection system. The vehicle can still maintain the set speed but cannot accelerate beyond it, regardless of throttle input.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Operating a commercial vehicle without a required speed limiter, or with a faulty, incorrectly calibrated or tampered unit, is a serious offence. Enforcement is carried out by the DVA in Northern Ireland and DVSA in Great Britain during roadside checks and annual vehicle inspections.
Consequences Can Include
- Fines of up to £5,000 per offence
- Immediate vehicle prohibition until the fault is rectified
- Penalty points on the operator's licence, potentially affecting licence renewal
- Criminal prosecution in cases of deliberate tampering or persistent non-compliance
Keeping your speed limiters properly calibrated and maintained is not just a legal obligation — it protects your operator's licence and your business reputation. Regular servicing at a DVA approved centre like Corr Brothers ensures your vehicles remain compliant and avoids costly roadside prohibitions.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often does a speed limiter need to be calibrated?
There is no fixed recalibration interval in the legislation, but speed limiters should be checked whenever the tachograph is calibrated (every two years), after any work that could affect the speed signal such as gearbox or tyre changes, or if there is any indication of malfunction. Many fleet operators include speed limiter checks in their annual service schedule.
How long does a speed limiter installation take?
A straightforward installation on a standard HGV typically takes between two and four hours depending on the vehicle type and the limiter system being fitted. We can usually complete the work within a single visit. Contact us with your vehicle details and we will give you an accurate time estimate.
Can I get my speed limiter and tachograph serviced at the same time?
Yes. As a DVA approved tachograph centre, we can calibrate your tachograph and speed limiter in the same appointment. This is the most efficient approach for fleet operators as both systems share the speed signal and should be checked together.
Do vans need speed limiters?
Standard light commercial vans under 3.5 tonnes do not require speed limiters under current legislation. However, goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes GVW are required to have a speed limiter set to 90 km/h. If your van has been uprated or converted and now exceeds 3.5 tonnes, it may require a speed limiter — contact us to check.
