How Speed Limiters Work

Speed limiters work by restricting the fuel supply or engine power when the vehicle reaches its set maximum speed. Modern systems typically:

1
Monitor Vehicle Speed

The speed limiter receives a signal from the vehicle's speed sensor or tachograph.

2
Compare to Set Limit

The unit continuously compares actual speed against the programmed maximum speed.

3
Restrict Engine Power

When the limit is reached, the system restricts fuel delivery to prevent further acceleration.

Penalties for Non-Compliance

Operating a vehicle without a required speed limiter, or with a faulty/tampered unit, can result in:

  • Fines up to £5,000
  • Vehicle prohibition
  • Points on operator licence
  • Potential criminal prosecution
