Book NowWhat is Smart 2 Tachograph?
Smart 2 (also known as Gen 2 Version 2 or G2V2) is the latest generation of digital tachograph mandated under EU Regulation 2020/1054. It features enhanced security, automatic border recording via GNSS, and improved data protection.
As the first workshop in Ireland to complete a Smart 2 retrofit, Corr Brothers has the expertise and experience to ensure your fleet remains compliant with all EU and UK regulations.
Smart 2 Tachograph Deadlines
In July 2020, the Mobility Package was published containing several regulations directly affecting the transport industry. The key retrofit deadlines are:

Technology
Smart 2 Key Features
Understanding the advanced technology in your new tachograph
REDCR Remote Detection
The Remote Early Detection Communication Reader (REDCR) can be hand-held, temporary roadside mounted, or vehicle mounted.
Control authorities with REDCR can use DSRC to target vehicles suspected of violations and remotely detect manipulation or misuse of recording equipment. Member States were required to equip control authorities with REDCR devices by 21st August 2024.
Automatic Border Detection
Smart 2 uses authenticated GNSS location with the official EU NUTS0 map for automatic recording of border crossings, including crossings between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Load, unload, or load/unload operations are recorded as separate events through data input menus, with locations recorded through GNSS. Maps are updated along with software at each two-yearly calibration.
Built-in Accelerometer
Smart 2 features a 3rd independent source of motion using a built-in accelerometer chip that can sense and detect movement automatically.
The tachograph will trigger and record a Vehicle Motion Conflict event when motion information from the gearbox sensor is contradicted by GNSS or the accelerometer, preventing manipulation.
Fully Updateable
The tachograph is software updateable with mandatory ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) using Bluetooth communications.
This future-proofs Smart 2 tachographs against future legislation changes, ensuring your investment remains compliant as regulations evolve.

FAQs
Smart 2 Tachograph Questions
What is a Smart 2 tachograph?
Smart 2 (also known as Gen 2 Version 2 or G2V2) is the latest generation of digital tachograph required under EU regulations. It includes enhanced security features, GNSS positioning, automatic border crossing detection, and a built-in accelerometer for independent motion detection.
When do I need a Smart 2 tachograph?
Vehicles registered after August 2023 require Smart 2 from first registration. Vehicles over 3.5t used internationally should already have Smart 2 fitted (deadline was August 2025). LCVs 2.5t-3.5t must upgrade by July 2026.
What are the fines for not having Smart 2?
In the Republic of Ireland, fines can reach €5,000 with possible imprisonment. In Northern Ireland/UK, fines start at £300 and your vehicle may be directed to a workshop.
How long does a Smart 2 retrofit take?
Most Smart 2 retrofits are completed within 2-3 hours. We offer while-you-wait service and same-day appointments for urgent requirements.
Do I need Smart 2 for cross-border journeys to Northern Ireland?
Yes. Any goods vehicle crossing the border between ROI and NI is considered international transport and requires a Smart 2 tachograph from the applicable deadline.
What is REDCR and how does it affect me?
REDCR (Remote Early Detection Communication Reader) allows enforcement officers to remotely check your tachograph for violations without stopping your vehicle. Member States were required to equip control authorities with REDCR devices by 21st August 2024, making roadside enforcement more effective.
Does Smart 2 automatically record border crossings?
Yes. Smart 2 uses authenticated GNSS location and the official EU NUTS0 map to automatically record border crossings, including crossings between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
How often does Smart 2 need calibration?
Smart 2 tachographs require calibration every two years. During calibration, maps and software are updated along with tachograph security, which may take longer than older tachograph calibrations.
